Iolite Tumbled Pendant

Iolite or also cordielite. It is sometimes referred to as the 'Viking's compass' due to its ability to determine the direction of the sun. The property that makes the iolite change color is called pleochroism - the ability to absorb different wavelengths of light depending upon its crystallographic orientation. A cube cut from oolite will look violet-blue from one angle, almost like sapphire, and can be essentially colorless from another angle, and a yellowish-blue from on top. In the past, this property led some people to call Iolite the 'water sapphire'. Iolite is noted for its dark blue-violet shades, in places with light patterns.
